Townes Van Zandt is the third studio album by the American singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt, released in September 1969 by Poppy Records. It includes re-recordings of four songs from his 1968 debut album, including the first serious song he ever wrote, "Waitin' Around To Die". Townes Van Zandt was recorded at Bradley's Barn in Nashville. The album consists of ten originals and showcase Van Zandt's poetic lyrics and trademark, uncluttered fingerpicking.
John Townes Van Zandt (March 7, 1944 – January 1, 1997), better known as Townes Van Zandt, was an American singer-songwriter. He wrote numerous songs, such as "Pancho and Lefty", "For the Sake of the Song", "Tecumseh Valley", "Rex's Blues", and "To Live is to Fly", that are widely considered masterpieces of American folk music. His musical style has often been described as melancholy and features-rich, poetic lyrics
You have to wonder how the immortal spirit of legendary troubled troubadour Townes Van Zandt feels about his oeuvre's increasing popularity among metalheads, as exemplified by 2012's Songs of Townes Van Zandt, featuring a three-headed monster of underground metal heavies in Scott Kelly (of Neurosis), Steve Von Till (ditto), and Scott "Wino" Weinrich (of Saint Vitus, Spirit Caravan, et. Chances are Townes, wherever he is, feels merely bemused, having bigger discorporal fish to fry right about now.
Townes Van Zandt never reached significant fame during his lifetime. Although highly respected by his peers and other songwriters, the mood and atmosphere of his music, coupled with his sometimes dark and sarcastic nature, was not suitable for the commercial country-industry of Nashville. Van Zandt’s songs did, however, reach popularity in his day through other artists; within his circle of outsider singer-songwriters, he was adored, though ultimately depression and alcoholism overshadowed his life. released March 4, 2014.
