Stephen Fain Earle (/ɜːrl/) (born January 17, 1955) is an American rock, country and folk singer-songwriter, record producer, author and actor. Earle began his career as a songwriter in Nashville and released his first EP in 1982. His breakthrough album was the 1986 album Guitar Town. Since then Earle has released 15 studio albums and received three Grammy awards.
American singer Steve Earle has released sixteen studio albums, including a collaboration with bluegrass artist Del McCoury. Earle's work reflects a wide range of styles, including bluegrass, roots rock, folk, blues and country. He or his labels have also released six live albums and eight compilation albums. Although Earle never charted within the Top 5 on the Hot Country Songs chart, he did chart several songs on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.
Townes is the 13th studio album by alternative country singer Steve Earle, released in 2009. It is an album on which he pays tribute to his friend and mentor, the late singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt by covering his songs. According to a New West Records press release, "The songs selected for Townes were the ones that meant the most to Earle and the ones he personally connected to (not including selections featured on previous Earle albums). Notable guest appearances on the album include Tom Morello (of Rage Against the treet Sweeper Social Club) playing electric guitar on "Lungs", and Earle's wife Allison Moorer singing backing vocals on "Loretta" and "To Live Is to Fly". Earle and his son, Justin Townes Earle trade verses on "Mr. Mudd & Mr. Gold". He is backed by The Bluegrass Dukes on "White Freightliner Blues" and "Delta Momma Blues".
Townes is a tribute album of songs by Earle’s idol Townes Van Zandt, who he ran away from home at age 14 to find. The two reportedly met in 1972, when Van Zandt heckled one of Earle’s sets, and remained friends until Van Zandt’s death in 1997. The album earned Earl his third best contemporary folk album Grammy. Earl reflected, This may be one of the best records I’ve ever made. That hurts a singer-songwriter’s feelings. Featuring Justin Townes Earle. Writers Townes Van Zandt. More Steve Earle albums. GUY. Townes van Zandt was a Texan singer/songwriter who died in 1997, largely as a result of long-term substance abuse. A cult artist and 'songwriter's songwriter', he never achieved much commercial success, but the body of work he left behind has ensured legendary status and a trail of covers and tributes by fellow artists, of which this rather lacklustre effort is the latest. It's not as if Steve Earle hasn't earned the right to record a whole album of van Zandt's wonderful songs
