Description

Gary Burton ‎– Next Generation. Label: Concord Jazz ‎– CCD-2277-2.

Next Generation (Gary Burton album). Next Generation is a studio album by American jazz vibraphonist Gary Burton. The album was released on April 12, 2005 via Concord Jazz label. John Fordham of The Guardian wrote "There's a strong Pat Metheny feel in plenty of places (pianist Vadim Neselovskyi is a particular devotee, to judge by the easy swing of his work here) and Gary Burton's openness to both classical music and jazz gets a shapely acknowledgement in Samuel Barber's Fuga.

Burton's skill on vibes is a given, but his ability to find four impressive young men able to jump right in and perform at a high level also deserves kudos. The leader first heard guitarist Julian Lage on the 2000 Grammy Awards at the tender age of 12; he was just 16 at the time of these sessions and had already appeared with Burton on the earlier CD Generations. Lage, who shows incredible chops without overdoing it, also contributed the easygoing, infectious strut "Walkin' in Music" and "Clarity," a playful duet with Burton.

Reunion is a 1989 album by Gary Burton, reuniting him with guitarist Pat Metheny for their first recordings in almost 13 years. Both have been called prodigies. Burton joined George Shearing's group in 1963 at the age of 19. He met Metheny at the Wichita Jazz Festival in 1973 when Metheny was 18 years old. After welcoming him as a teaching colleague at the Berklee College of Music, he hired Metheny for the newly expanded Gary Burton Quintet in 1974.

Gary Burton: Next Generation by Andrew Velez, published on May 23, 2006. Vibes virtuoso, composer, educator and five-time Grammy winner Gary Burton has played a pivotal role in furthering the careers of newcomers through the years. Among many others, John Scofield, Carla Bley and Pat Metheny come quickly to mind. I take my cue from Stan Getz, who often hired younger players to stay sharp," Burton has remarked; In his own early 20s, he performed with Getz. Burton's latest quintet showcases sixteen-year-old guitarist Julian Lage, whom he first met during the 1998 Grammy Award telecast
