John Milton Cage Jr. (September 5, 1912 – August 12, 1992) was an American composer, music theorist, writer, and artist. A pioneer of indeterminacy in music, electroacoustic music, and non-standard use of musical instruments, Cage was one of the leading figures of the post-war avant-garde. Cage was also a pioneer of the prepared piano (a piano with its sound altered by objects placed between or on its strings or hammers), for which he wrote numerous dance-related works and a few concert pieces. The best known of these is Sonatas and Interludes (1946–48). Released as the lead single for their third album, Different Kind of Free, this was their only No. 1 Christian adult contemporary (AC) single. It also peaked at No. 2 on CHR, making it the second-highest ZOEgirl song on that chart.

Morton Feldman - John Cage: Music For Keyboard 1935-1948, Morton Feldman: The Early Years Album. Artist: Morton Feldman.

Cage's remarkable early keyboard music, including works which brought "prepared piano" into the avant-garde vocabulary. Jeanne Kirstein performs all with authority, sensitivity, excitement, and enchantment. CONTENTS: Two Pieces (1935), Metamorphosis (1938), Bacchanale (1938), The Perilous Night (Winter 1943-44), Tossed as It Is Untroubled (1943), A Valentine Out of Season (1944), Root of an Unfocus (1944), and Two Pieces (1946).

Cage's meeting with pianist Jeanne Kirstein was crucial to his development and John Cage: Music for Keyboard 1935-1948 did wonders for his reputation as a composer
