Complete your John Cage, Christian Wolff collection. Not sure if this is unique to this reissue-as I have not heard any other than this one-but B2 is clearly the horn-piano duet, and B3 the string quartet track, not the opposite, as listed here. Reply See 1 reply Notify me 1 Helpful.
Cage's objective was to bring about a situation "in which any determinations made by the performer would not necessarily be realizable. For example, one player's interpretation of the score might involve turning down the volume of the other's equipment, thereby rendering his action inaudible. "In this instance," Cage writes, "performance is made indeterminate of itself.
Christian G. Wolff (born March 8, 1934) is an American composer of experimental classical music. Wolff was born in Nice, France, to the German literary publishers Helen and Kurt Wolff, who had published works by Franz Kafka, Robert Musil, and Walter Benjamin. After relocating to the . in 1941, they helped to found Pantheon Books with other European intellectuals who had fled Europe during the rise of fascism.
Performers of John Cage’s piano concerto could theoretically play nothing at all, if that’s what they wanted. The point is about choice. John, you’re my man, said a trombonist who played in the original performance. I’ll play for you any time. Trust is the making of indeterminate music and Apartment House’s new recording is all trust. Sixty years on, 83-year-old Christian Wolff has written a companion piece for Cage’s concerto that should feel like a throwback: the name Resistance, the quotation from a Pete Seeger protest song, the old chance techniques. But Wolff’s music, his gracious, urgent way of questioning how we relate to each other, still feel entirely relevant.
