Carole King's Tapestry made her a star in 1971, but before most of the album's devotees knew her name, she already had been an enormously successful songwriter for more than a decade. King and lyricist-husband Gerry Goffin spent most of the '60s writing hits like Little Eva's "The Loco-Motion" and The Monkees' "Pleasant Valley Sunday" (which reached No. 1 and No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively). President Barack Obama Honors 'Living Legend' Carole King At White House Concert. The cover art for Tapestry, taken by famed rock photographer Jim McCrary, is an iconic vision of Southern Californian hippie bliss: King, barefoot and frizzy-haired, relaxing by her window with a crafts project and a cat. Neighbors who dropped by to record included Joni Mitchell and James Taylor.

Carole King – Chains Lyrics. Chains, my baby's got me locked up in chains And they ain't the kind that you can see Whoa, it's chains of love got a hold on me, yeah. Chains, well, I can't break away from these chains Can't run around 'Cause I'm not free Whoa, these chains of love won't let me be, yeah. Now believe me when I tell you I think you're fine I'd like to hold you But I can't break away from all of these chains

She married Larkey in 1968, but The City was short-lived and disbanded after one album. In 1970 she toured with James Taylor and launched her solo career with "Writer" and then the classic "Tapestry". The hit albums continued and in 1976 she divorced from Charles Larkey (children: Molly & Levi).

Carole King (born Carol Joan Klein, February 9, 1942) is an American composer and singer-songwriter. She is the most successful female songwriter of the latter half of the 20th century in the USA, having written or co-written 118 pop hits on the Billboard Hot 100 between 1955 and 1999. King also wrote 61 hits that charted in the UK, making her the most successful female songwriter on the UK singles charts between 1952 and 2005. After experiencing commercial disappointment with her debut album Writer, King scored her breakthrough with the album Tapestry, which topped the . album chart for 15 weeks in 1971 and remained on the charts for more than six years. King has made 25 solo albums, the most successful being Tapestry, which held the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a female artist for more than 20 years.

Unlike many previous Carole King collections, Sony/Legacy’s 2010 set The Essential Carole King doesn’t concentrate solely on her hits as a performer: it also has a second disc of songs she wrote for other artists, the songs that established her reputation as one of the great songwriters of her time
