The Alban Berg Quartett's recordings of Schubert's quartets and quintet in C are as good as it gets in these works. Although I love the ABQ's Beethoven, I think their Schubert stands in greater relief from the rest of the pack. They just seem to be entirely in their element with Schubert, relishing the most tranquil and beautiful moments while playing the faster movements with abundant yet appropriate energy. Interpretive approach aside, their impeccable ensemble and undeniable virtuosity are not showy, but are rather channeled to benefit the music.

The exquisitely beautiful second movement, which in my opinion is autobiographical and describes Schubert's own death. Schubert died at age 31 of complications of Syphilis, which in Schubert's time was unfortunately untreatable, a few weeks after he completed this composition. The first movement is also extraordinarily beautiful, and very well played in this recording
