Franz Schubert's final chamber work, the String Quintet in C major (D. 956, Op. posth. 163) is sometimes called the "Cello Quintet" because it is scored for a standard string quartet plus an extra cello instead of the extra viola which is more usual in conventional string quintets. It was composed in 1828 and completed just two months before the composer's death. The first public performance of the piece did not occur until 1850, and publication occurred three years later in 1853.

163, . 56 ), and there had been spacious and lyrical ones (from the Vienna Konzerthaus Quartet in 1951, Quintet In C, to the Aeolian Quartet in 1966, Schubert: String Quintet in C, D. 163) and many in between. But Melos-Rostropovich reconciled these apparently incompatible extremes, theirs was a spacious and lyrical version but also a biting, powerful and dramatic one, to the point almost of violence. One major factor that works against the Alberni version is the very low volume at which the CD transfer is cut. I don't know if that was originally the case with the LP, but my impression on first hearing of the CD was that of a uniformly mellow and gentle reading, kids imitating vehemence rather than vehement. In fact, comparing then with the recording of the Melos Quartet, I realized that I had to double the volume level to make things sonically comparable.
