Description

Gold: Greatest Hits is the first greatest hits album released by pop group Steps. It reached number one on the UK charts. The lead single from the album was "Chain Reaction" a cover of Diana Ross's 1986 hit, the single reached number 2 in the UK charts and was the group's highest selling single since "Say You'll Be Mine/Better The Devil You Know". The second single from the album, "Words Are Not Enough", a slow ballad was released with a cover of "I Know Him So Well" from Abbamania

Never before have all The Members significant records been collected together on one compilation. Whilst known mainly for the punk era hits in the UK (The Sound Of The Suburbs, Solitary Confinement and Offshore Banking Business), The Members had far-reaching hits all over the world. In the USA they are known for the 80’s MTV smash Working Girl also a huge hit in Australia where another 80s track Radio made the slot.

The Members were formed in 1977 by Nicky Tesco. Tesco was a graduate who, having failed to emigrate to Canada, had returned to Camberley, Surrey, UK, and had been working in a variety of jobs when the opportunity arose to form a band.

A greatest hits album is a compilation album of successful, previously released songs by a particular music artist or band. Albums entitled Greatest Hits, or similar titles, listed alphabetically by band name or artist's last name, include: Greatest Hits by 2Pac (1998). Greatest Hits '93–'03 by 311 (2004). Best Of by 50 Cent (2017). Greatest Hits by A Teens (2005). Most Requested Hits by Aaron Carter (2003). Come Get It: The Very Best of Aaron Carter by Aaron Carter (2006).

Greatest hits retrospectives are more than just stocking-fillers; they sell in their millions. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Official Albums Chart, we reveal the greatest of the greatest – the hits collections that sold the most. Queen – Greatest Hits. Can there be anyone left in the UK who doesn't know a Queen song? Even young whippersnappers will know We Are The Champions and We Will Rock You, right? Right. Pretty much all the Number 1s are here – hence the name of the album – from From Me To You (1963) to The Ballad of John and Yoko (1969). Demand for the Fab Four had shown no signs of slowing 30 years after their break up: 1 spent nine weeks at Number 1, and has sold . 3 million copies in the UK. MORE: Check out the Beatles' record breaking chart history in their archive. Abba – Greatest Hits (1976). Hang on, didn't we already have an Abba greatest hits album?

Like The Undertones, The Members were a late-arriving punk band, although they weren’t really a post-punk band. They dabbled in reggae with their single Offshore Banking Business, but it wasn’t the experimental, edgy, dub-spacious sound of PiL et al; theirs was a cuddlier form of appropriation. This is the first time the Camberley band’s singles have been brought together on one collection, and it features smart artwork by their original designer, Malcolm Garrett.

There exist greatest hits compilations that become as important to a career as the best studio album. Creedence Clearwater Revival are known for many reasons: a San Francisco Bay Area band that sounded like they were from the Louisiana bayou, several commercially successful albums, more than a dozen hit songs, and a band break-up so full of hard feelings that brothers John and Tom Fogerty never reconciled and surviving members still refuse a reunion. Given that the majority of the singles didn’t appear on albums (and the accompanying B-sides are actually pretty good), Singles Going Steady is an essential for any punk collection.

Hard to believe it, but at one point all the Goo Goo Dolls ever wanted to be was the Replacements - nothing more than a ragged band playing kickass rock & roll along with the occasional heartbroken ballad. Of course, they were never as chaotic as the 'Mats; they were good guys where Paul Westerberg and company were ornery, unpredictable artists, prone to self-sabotage, legendarily throwing away their potential breakthrough gig on Saturday Night Live. That wasn't the Goo Goo Dolls

Whilst the greatest hits album might only contain a small number of singles, A DVD release will often contain all the band's music videos up until that point. Two examples of this are Blur's The Best of DVD (2000) and Jamiroquai's High Times: Singles 1992–2006 (2006). Queen have released Greatest Video Hits 1 (2002) and Greatest Video Hits 2 (2003). This trend started in the early 1980s, and made it necessary for collectors to purchase the "greatest hits" album if they wished to have the complete catalog of an artist's songs, even if those collectors owned all the albums containing the pre-existing hits. By contract, another solution to acquire only the songs, via an online music store, may also be restricted to purchase of the album only, even online.
