What It Was, Was Football is a monologue by actor-comedian Andy Griffith. The monologue is a description of a college football game, as seen by a naive country preacher who attends the game by accident and is entirely puzzled by it. At Griffith's request, Milton Alderfer (who was only 19 at the time), recorded and produced the original master tape in Greensboro, North Carolina. The master was then sent to Chapel Hill, North Carolina and mass-produced by the Colonial Records label in late 1953.
Andy Griffith (June 1, 1926 - July 3, 2012) is best known for his starring roles in two very popular TV series, 'The Andy Griffith Show' (1960) and 'Matlock' (1986). Griffith sang as part of some of his acting roles, most notably in 'A Face in the Crowd' and on some episodes of 'The Andy Griffith Show'. Within recent years, he has recorded successful albums of classic Christian hymns and standup comedy/musicals.

It was an amazing environment. And I think it was a reflection of the way he felt about having the opportunity to create something that people could enjoy. It was always with respect and passion for the opportunity and really what it could offer people in a very unpretentious and earthy way. He felt he was always working in service of an audience he really respected and cared about. Please see the documentation for {{columns-list}}.

But anyhow what I was a-tellin was that both bunches-full wanted that thang and one bunch got it an it made the other bunch just as mad as they could be and friends I seen that evenin the awfullest fight that Id ever seen in my life! I did! They would run at one another and kick one another and throw one another down and stomp on one another and grind their feet in one another and I dont know what all! And just as fast as one would get hurt theyd tote him off and run anothern on! Well, they done that as long as I set there but pretty soon this boy that had said Ticket please he come up to me . .
Griffith's descriptions of such a common sight as a football field from the point of view of someone completely baffled by it are endlessly charming: .and somebody had took and drowed white lines all over it and drove posties in it and I don't know what all. And I look down there and I seen five or six convicts runnin' up and down and a-blowin whistles both bunches full of them men wanted this funny-lookin little punkin' to play with . He was 86. His death was confirmed by the Dare County sheriff, Doug Doughtie. Mr. Griffith was already a star - on Broadway in No Time for Sergeants and in Hollywood in Elia Kazan ’s film A Face in the Crowd - when The Andy Griffith Show made its debut in the fall of 1960. And he delighted a later generation of television viewers in the 1980s and ’90s in the title role of the courtroom drama Matlock. But his fame was never as great as it was in the 1960s, when he starred for eight years as Andy Taylor, the sagacious sheriff of the make-believe town of Mayberry, .
