Andy Griffith (June 1, 1926 - July 3, 2012) is best known for his starring roles in two very popular TV series, 'The Andy Griffith Show' (1960) and 'Matlock' (1986). Griffith sang as part of some of his acting roles, most notably in 'A Face in the Crowd' and on some episodes of 'The Andy Griffith Show'.
What It Was, Was Football is a monologue by actor-comedian Andy Griffith. The monologue is a description of a college football game, as seen by a naive country preacher who attends the game by accident and is entirely puzzled by it. At Griffith's request, Milton Alderfer (who was only 19 at the time), recorded and produced the original master tape in Greensboro, North Carolina. The master was then sent to Chapel Hill, North Carolina and mass-produced by the Colonial Records label in late 1953.

Sixty years ago Andy Griffith got his big break in show business thanks to story entitled, What it was, was football. While living in the Triangle, the 1949 UNC graduate composed What It Was, Was Football, a folksy yarn about a country deacon’s first football game. Chapel Hill-based Colonial Records released the story, as told by Deacon Andy Griffith, on November 14, 1953 - the same day the Tar Heels lost 34-14 to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. As the popularity of the record soared (it eventually sold more than 1 million copies), so did Griffith’s success.

Griffith was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame in 1991 for his body of comedic and dramatic work, which also included the 1977 miniseries Washington: Behind Closed Doors. Griffith was born an only child June 1, 1926, in Mount Airy, . Early on in life, he considered going into the ministry, but while studying music at the University of North Carolina he was encouraged to take up acting. His act was so successful that Griffith quit his day job and in 1953 recorded the comedy album What It Was, Was Football. Griffith came up with the idea for the album while en route to speak before a civic group, which his wife had mistakenly booked twice. Realizing he couldn’t use the same material, he came up with the idea on the 75-mile drive. The humor and subsequent album caught the attention of a record executive, and Griffith was signed to do comedy albums.
