Before Black Sabbath, there were plenty of rock groups that played heavy: The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, Blue Cheer, Iron Butterfly, Led Zeppelin. But the music that Sabbath created in the early 70s was heavier and darker than anything that had come before, and it would prove seminal. Black Sabbath are the forefathers of heavy metal, says Rick Rubin, the producer of the band’s most recent album 13. They may well be the heaviest band of all time. And I don’t know of a more influential band other than The Beatles. Considered by many to be the first heavy metal band, Black Sabbath was formed in 1968 by Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward. The band's original name was the Polka Tulk Blues Band (later shortened to Polka Tulk) and later on changed to Earth (12) before becoming Black Sabbath inspired by an Italian horror movie of the same name. The original line-up lasted until 1979, after which Osbourne was fired and replaced by Ronnie James Dio. The line-up changes would continue, with no line-up remaining intact for consecutive studio releases.
Best Black Sabbath album to have ever been recorded! Best lineup of Black Sabbath, by far: Ozzy Osbourne - vocals Tony Iommi - guitar Geezer Butler - bass Bill Ward - drums. 5 Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. This album was the first Sabbath album I played from start to finish for a couple of months. I was officially a Sabbath fan. This is their best album by far. Epic, Brilliant, Masterpiece, Magnum Opus. Song for song, this is Heavy Metal at its best and definitely, the best Black Sabbath album. Great album, but don't go into it thinking it'll be hard rock/metal album like the first six. It's got more of a rhythmic/blues rock feel to i. .I can't explain it that well, but it's great. The riffs and vocals especially are outstanding.
