Description

The British branch of Polydor released the double-album compilation The Story of the Who in 1976. It was the most exhaustive collection yet assembled, running from the group's early singles through Who By Numbers. Exhaustive doesn't necessarily mean comprehensive - for some reason, Quadrophenia is completely overlooked, and a full side of Tommy material is way too much in this context. Also, some great songs, such as "A Legal Matter" and "Join Together, " are missing, which may frustrate some listeners.

The Who have been with several labels over the years. In the United Kingdom and elsewhere outside North America, they were signed originally to Brunswick Records. In 1966, they moved to Polydor Records and took the rights to their Brunswick recordings with them. They created and moved to Track Records the following year with distribution by Polydor. They left Track in 1974 and returned to Polydor directly, remaining with the label ever since.

The Who Live at the Fillmore East 1968 is released for the first time as an 3-LP and 2-CD set. April 27. Roger Daltrey performs two songs with Nile Rodgers and Chic at a celebration gala for the We Are Family Foundation at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York. They play 'Who Are You' and 'Baba O'Riley'. Music From the Soundtrack of the Movie The Kids Are Alright is re-released for Record Store Day 2018. Roger Daltrey releases his first solo album in 26 years, As Long As I Have You, produced by Dave Eringa and featuring Pete Townshend on guitar on seven of the tracks. Roger and members of The Who band begin a series of 13 dates performing the full version of The Who's Tommy at venues across the US accompanied by a 45-piece orchestra – a different orchestra performs at each venue. The orchestral conductor is Keith Levenson.

A year later, the Who released arguably the decade’s best concept album. As the Who were creating a larger global presence for themselves with the American breakthrough of "I Can See for Miles" and the band’s electrifying performance at the Monterey International Pop Festival, Townshend’s ambitions continued to grow. As Townshend explored his newfound spirituality and toured extensively with the Who, he began to piece together bits of the Tommy story. Sensation" was based on a sexual attraction he had to a fellow Baba follower in Australia. Sally Simpson" came from an ugly experience on the road.

How a rubbish dump in County Durham provided the backdrop to The Who's iconic album sleeve. Up there among the elite British rock albums, The Who’s Who’s Next was not only a triumphant follow-up to Tommy, but also touched by the hand of Lady Luck – and that’s never more true than with the way the cover concept came together. I was working with Pete Townshend on his Lifehouse project, which was an ambitious concept based on a futuristic era when people got their entertainment through being strapped into special suits, recalls Ethan Russell, the American photographer who took the album’s iconic cover shot
