On Stage is a double live album originally released by the British hard rock band Rainbow in 1977. It was recorded live over several German and Japanese dates in late 1976 during the Rising world tour. The recording features the customary introduction to a Rainbow show – the classic quote from The Wizard of Oz, "Toto: I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore

Breaking with '70s heavy metal tradition by releasing a live album after only two studio efforts (you're supposed to have three before the live one), Rainbow served up this double platter in 1977. On Stage is full of great songs and playing, but somehow it lacks some of the excitement that existed at those early Ritchie Blackmore concerts. The production is just kind of flat. That doesn't change the fact that there is some great material to be found here and nowhere else, such as the side-long version of "Mistreated," from Deep Purple's Burn

Live, Reissued, Remastered. This tour started short after they did finished the album "Rising", so I expected more songs from this album. Blackmores solo project, Rainbow, gave him even greater scope to express himself through his Fender Stratocaster. As consequence many concur that the '76 tour saw Balckmore take his ablility to an even higher level than he had displayed in DP (from the booklet). On Stage is the first of two live albums Rainbow did in the 70's, the other being Live in Germany. It's hard to say which one is better, as Live in Germany does have more songs (including the epic Stargazer). This album just feels like it has more energy to me, though. The biggest problem I have with the Rainbow live albums is that their set lists aren't really that great. For one, compared to most other bands' live shows it's very short. Not to say this is a bad album at all, in fact, I find myself listening to it quite a bit. It starts off incredibly strong, with Kill the King, a new song that would appear in studio form on their next album, Long Live Rock 'n' Roll. For those of you not familiar with it, Kill the King is a fast-paced rocker full of catchy riffs, sweep arpeggios, and epic lyrics. They couldn't have made a better song for opening their concerts.
