Rising (also known as Rainbow Rising) is the second studio album by the British rock band Rainbow, released in 1976. In issue 4 of Kerrang! magazine (cover-dated October 1981), Rising was voted the greatest heavy metal album of all time. In 2017, it was ranked 48th at Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time".

Fittingly enough, a young Ronnie James Dio provides the goblin-like frontman presence required by the increasingly Baroque Blackmore. The young Dio is at his best when he fully gives in to his own and Blackmore's medieval fantasy leanings, in hard-rocking tracks like "Sixteenth Century Greensleeves" and "Man on the Silver Mountain. The dark, trudging doom rock of "Self Portrait" most clearly showcases what they were capable of. The album's ponderous lyrics are occasionally punctuated by poetic phrases such as "crossbows in the firelight.

Not only is Rising the best Rainbow album, I think it is the single best example of Ritchie Blackmore that exists. Even more so than any Deep Purple release where, no matter how dominant Blackmore was, he still had to conform a little to his bandmates. After all, Deep Purple was a BAND, Rainbow was Blackmore's project.
