Sun Ra and Arkestra playing Billy Strayhorn's "Take The A Train" at the Jazzfestival Montreux on July 9th, 1976.
The album was recorded during the 1976 Montreux Jazz Festival, and has a bit more focus and polish than some of the other Arkestra live material from the time – a mature, coherent sound that almost points the way towards some of their work to come in the 80s – when Ra and the group were finally reaching the wider audience they deserved . Live at Montreux is an album by Sun Ra recorded in the summer of 1976 at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland under the billing Sun Ra and his Intergalactic Cosmo Arkestra. It was first issued on CD by Universe Records in Italy, with poor sound quality and the track "On Sound Infinity Spheres" faded out early by about six minutes. The later Japanese P-Vine and US Inner City CDs both use earlier source.
Live At Montreux, a two-CD reissue that features Sun Ra's Arkestra coming up with their own versions of both swing standards and futuristic originals. 'This live set is an extraordinary documentation of his many talents as a bandleader, arranger and producer. Though Sun Ra was well into his third decade of artistry, this 1976 live set was an introduction to a wider audience. The double album - back in a period when such releases were all the rage - features the 15 piece Intergalactic Cosmo Arkestra and has 14 selections that were familiar to fans, such as On Sound Infinity Spheres, El is the Sound of Joy, We Travel the Spaceways and Take the "A" Train, Sun Ra's salute to Duke Ellington.

Sun Ra & his Arkestra, LIVE AT MONTREUX Inner City IC-1039 2 LP Album Jazz. Although The Arkestra is capable of almost any musical style you can name, the avant-garde side of things does dominate this album with lots of over the top free solos being passed around to many members of the band. Meanwhile, the band’s exotica side is represented with the quirky Lights on a Satellite and the bands ability to transform older jazz styles is heard on a breakneck high speed chaotic version of Take the A Train.
