Mary Lou Williams was sporadically recorded during most of her career, so her appearance on a 1979 release (two years before her death) as a solo pianist at the 1978 Montreux Jazz Festival was a welcome addition to her discography and ended up being one of her greatest recordings. The opening medley is a history of jazz and includes spiritual, ragtime, gospel, Kansas City swing, boogie-woogie, and bop, all of which Williams plays with authority

Black American jazz pianist, composer and arranger who performed with almost every major jazz artist throughout her career and renowned for her approach to the 'bop' style. Williams grew up in a 'shotgun shack', where local musicians would gather and play. She then played with Kirk's band at the Pearl Theater in Philadelphia, backing Blanche Calloway's act, followed by stints at Winnwood Beach Park Ballroom, the Sunset and Fairyland Park Ballroom in Kansas City.

In 2006, Geri Allen's Mary Lou Williams Collective released their album Zodiac Suite: Revisited. A YA historical novel based on Mary Lou Williams and her early life, entitled Jazz Girl, by Sarah Bruce Kelly, was published in 2010. A children's book based on Mary Lou Williams, entitled The Little Piano Girl, by Ann Ingalls and Maryann MacDonald with illustrations by Giselle Potter, was published in 2010.
