War & Peace is an album recorded by Edwin Starr and released by Motown Records in 1970. The album reached number 52 on the Billboard 200 and on the R&B album chart, while the single, "War" reached on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, where it remained for 15 weeks. The song was nominated for best R&B Male Vocal Performance at the 13th Annual Grammy Awards in 1971. The album's arrangements are by David Van De Pitte, Henry Cosby, Paul Riser, Wade Marcus and Willie Shorter.

So Norman Whitfield asked Edwin Starr would he like to record the song. Edwin agreed because he hadn’t recorded anything in over six months and was ready to get back into the studio. The song was released in the summer of 1970 and became an instant million seller. War & Peace’ is by no means a psychedelic soul album but a mixture of classic Motown uptempo songs in the same vein as his two sixties classic albums ‘Soul Master‘ and ‘25 Miles‘. The music itself speaks volumes and ‘War & Peace’ whilst featuring the ‘new’ sound of Motown at the end of the sixties still managers to capture the excitement of his output during the sixties.

They later did a version of "War," but Starr completely vaporized their rendition to the extent that most people today think he wrote it. Starr was now a celebrity and briefly in Motown's top echelon. The fact that everything else on the album is only fair to average didn't even matter in the scope of things.
