Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday at Newport is a 1958 live album by Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, recorded at the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival. Fitzgerald's first track promoted her recent album Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Rodgers & Hart Songbook (1956), and after several teething problems with the microphone, and tempo problems on "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down (And Write Myself a Letter)", she delivers a stunning scat solo on "Air Mail Special", quoting from several recent pop hits.

Back when Billie Holiday was first accorded the accolade it really meant something. So we’re attempting the impossible, to come up with 20 tracks that tell the story of her career in just 20 Billie Holiday songs. As usual we’ll start at the very beginning – well almost. Billie’s first visit to a recording studio was on 18 October 1933 with clarinettist, Benny Goodman and his Orchestra that included Gene Krupa on drums. Billie recorded one song that day, but ‘Your Mother’s son-in-Law’ gives no real hint of her promise. Follow the Billie Holiday Best Of playlist here. Billie Holiday: American jazz singer with a career spanning nearly thirty years. Nicknamed "Lady Day" by her friend and music partner Lester Young, Holiday had a seminal influence on jazz music and pop singing. Her vocal style, strongly inspired by jazz instrumentalists, pioneered a new way of manipulating phrasing and tempo. She was known for her vocal delivery and improvisational skills, which made up for her limited range and lack of formal music education. I Love You, A Fine Romance, Stormy Weather и другие песни.
Ella Fitzgerald & Billie Holiday at Newport presents the naturally intriguing results when Verve paired two sets recorded two days apart (over the 4th of July weekend, 1957) by the two best female singers of the 20th century. Unfortunately, circumstances weren't in their favor, as the combined factors of an unsympathetic band (for Fitzgerald) and shaky health (for Holiday) make these sets just a step below the expected level of greatness.
