Chichester Psalms is an extended choral composition in three movements by Leonard Bernstein for boy treble or countertenor, choir and orchestra. The text was arranged by the composer from the Book of Psalms in the original Hebrew. Part 1 uses Psalms 100 and 108, Part 2 uses 2 and 23, and Part 3 uses 131 and 133. Bernstein scored the work for a reduced orchestra, but also made a version for a smaller ensemble of organ, one harp, and percussion.

Featuring mezzo-soprano Christa Ludwig in a recording originally released in 1978, this album presents the composer in rousing interpretations of his own works. 96 kHz, 24-bit PCM – DG CD Studio Masters. This album contains high-resolution digital transfers of material originating from an analogue master source.

Leonard Bernstein's association with the Israel Philharmonic began early in his career as a conductor and composer, and in 1977 the orchestra organized a Bernstein Festival to mark the 30th anniversary of their first concert together. The festival lasted two weeks and consisted solely of works composed by Bernstein. Later that same year, in August of 1977, they appeared together at the Berlin Festival, which is when (and where) these live performances were recorded. The Chichester Psalms were unfamiliar to me until I acquired this disk.

The legendary Leonard Bernstein leads the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in this recording of works by Mendelssohn. The picturesque evocations of Scotland’s rugged landscape in the Symphony No. 3 are delightfully realized in this passionate and emotive interpretation and the highly Romantic Hebridesoverture is beautifully painted by Bernstein and his orchestra. The Reformation is the least popular of Mendelssohn’s three best-known symphonies, though I suspect it means much more to any German listener, to whom the use of the Dresden Amen, the hymn Ein’ feste Burg, and other themes that lie deep.

Symphony N. ("Jeremiah"), for mezzo-soprano & orchestra. 4. I. Prophecy (Weissagung, Prophétie).
