The third album by Arcade Fire was a breakthrough commercially and exposure-wise, for the band. The ‘The Suburbs, Month of May’ 12" was the first single released. The two follow-ups, ‘We Used to Wait’ and ‘Ready to Start’ were the most succesful singles from the album in most countries including the US. The cover (there are eight different versions) shows a typical suburban home with a car parked in front. The car may also be symbolical for the perspective of the singer (and thus the listener) revisiting such a suburb, and reflecting back on his youth. The Suburbs Q&A.

Arcade Fire never aim for anything less than grand statements. That quality has played a huge role in making them very, very popular; it's also their greatest weakness. Funeral was wracked with agony and grief, but what made it one of the transcendent records of the 2000s was that it avoided easy answers. You'd figure an album bluntly called The Suburbs that focuses on The Way We Live might repeat some of Neon Bible's worst tendencies. Instead, it's a satisfying return to form- proof that Arcade Fire can still make grand statements without sounding like they're carrying the weight of the world.

The Suburbs’ is an astonishing achievement for Arcade Fire; it boasts exquisite sophisticated songwriting that subtly taps into a sense of modern existential anxiety and elevates its makers yet again into a different musical league entirely. Arcade Fire, because they’re really this damn good, are among the very few indie bands that could attempt a 65-minute album about the philosophical quandaries of the suburbs and pull it off completely.

The Suburbs is the third studio album by Canadian indie rock band Arcade Fire, released on August 2, 2010. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Irish Albums Chart, the UK Albums Chart, the US Billboard 200 chart, and the Canadian Albums Chart.

Up to this point, I haven't really payed much attention to Arcade Fire. Was it the lack of time, the fact there are so many (equally great if not greater) bands, etc. Maybe its the sleeve here that attracted me first, cannot tell. Well, for all of its sleepiness with occasional bursts of energy (and despite the universal acclaim votes that were there probably way before it was actually released), 'The Suburbs' is an altogether pretty enjoyable album - not the one that grabs you at the first listen (or a number of them that follow), but the beauty is it manages to depict the traces it presents in the very title. Musically, it is a nicely orchestrated collection of songs lost in a number of styles (while the obvious one leans more towards Americana, a phantom presence of Shoegaze, New Wave and Lynch/Badalamenti melancholy is also evident) - adding nice twists to the playlist.
