Suburbs is an album by the American New wave band The Suburbs, released in 1986. It was their first and only release on A&M Records. The album is out of print and has never been released on compact disc. in a fashion that completely sublimates all of the qualities that had made the quintet so musically interesting in the first place. You'd figure an album bluntly called The Suburbs that focuses on The Way We Live might repeat some of Neon Bible's worst tendencies. Instead, it's a satisfying return to form- proof that Arcade Fire can still make grand statements without sounding like they're carrying the weight of the world. The metrics of The Suburbs are misleading: At 16 tracks, including interludes and multi-part songs, it might seem like Arcade Fire are shooting for their Sandinista!, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, or Sign O' The Times- a band at the peak of their powers reacting against the walls. The bulk of The Suburbs focuses on this quiet desperation borne of compounding the pain of wasting your time as an adult by romanticizing the wasted time of your youth. As bleak as the lyrics are, though, they're buoyed by the band's leanest, loosest songwriting yet.
The third album by Arcade Fire was a breakthrough commercially and exposure-wise, for the band. The ‘The Suburbs, Month of May’ 12" was the first single released. The two follow-ups, ‘We Used to Wait’ and ‘Ready to Start’ were the most succesful singles from the album in most countries including the US. The cover (there are eight different versions) shows a typical suburban home with a car parked in front. The car may also be symbolical for the perspective of the singer (and thus the listener) revisiting such a suburb, and reflecting back on his youth.
The Suburbs’ is an astonishing achievement for Arcade Fire; it boasts exquisite sophisticated songwriting that subtly taps into a sense of modern existential anxiety and elevates its makers yet again into a different musical league entirely. The Suburbs is a beautiful album, woven by the feeling of nostalgia. It's like coming home after a long time. 8. 2y. AmericaanSpirit. 87. If there were a peak indie rock album, it would undoubtedly be this.
