Tin Drum is the fifth and final studio album by English band Japan, released in November 1981 by record label Virgin. It peaked at No. 12 on the UK charts, and featured the top 5 single "Ghosts. It has received acclaim as the band's best work. Tin Drum continued the band's now-established mix of electronic elements with traditional instrumentation, but leans far more towards Far Eastern and Orientialist influences than any of their previous albums

Tin Drum is the fifth and final studio album by British new wave band Japan. It is their most commercially successful studio album, peaking at on the UK albums chart. Following the departure of guitarist Rob Dean, Japan began to let more East Asian–particularly Chinese–influences seep into their music, and into Sylvian’s lyrics as well. The band started experimenting with all sorts of different Chinese-influenced synth and percussion sounds, as keyboardist Richard Barbieri recalled in 1994 to Sound on Sound: We took such care over each individual sound that we got quite paranoid about all.

Rather than repeat the sheer restraint on Gentlemen Take Polaroids, Tin Drum is an album of energy, Sylvian's singing still the decadently joyful thing it is, but the arrangements and performances tight, full, and active. The fusion of exquisite funk courtesy of Karn and Jansen's joined-at-the-hip rhythm section and a range of Asian music influences, from instrumentation to subject matter, combined with an even wider use of technological approaches to create the dramatic, sly songs on offer

Guitarist Rob Dean had left by this point and vocalist David Sylvian had taken on his duties, which had been very greatly reduced by the band's change of musical direction.
