Alchemy: An Index of Possibilities is David Sylvian's second solo album, released in 1985 on cassette only and produced by Sylvian and Nigel Walker. It was reissued in its original form on CD in Japan in 1991. The opening suite "Words with the Shaman" was simultaneously issued as a 12" single, while "Steel Cathedrals" was used in a short film by Sylvian and Yasayuki Yamaguchi, shot in Tokyo, Japan, and released on VHS. The soundtrack features the voice of Jean Cocteau.

Alchemy-Index of Possibilities Remastered Caroline 2007. Sort: Recent best-seller. Alchemy - An Index of Possibilities is the second solo studio album from former Japan frontman David Sylvian. David Sylvians debut studio album Brilliant Trees (1984) was a good album that sounded a lot like the last couple of Japan albums but with a world music influence. The music on Brilliant Trees was centered around Davids warm and deeply emotional vocal style. Alchemy - An Index of Possibilities is not the natural follow up from David Sylvian and I have to say that Im a bit impressed with Davids boldness when you think about.

David Sylvian’s first four solo albums, newly reissued on vinyl, exude an intense but ambiguous loneliness. I wrestle with an outlook on life that shifts between darkness and shadowy light, he sings during his most forthright song, Orpheus. Throughout these records, he does battle-with his outlook, with his past, with his expectations  . His next two releases-the entirely instrumental Alchemy: An Index of Possibilities and the double album Gone to Earth-are more transitional. The former is a strange hodgepodge of collaborations and soundtrack material.
