This three-CD box set contains all of the recordings Charlie Parker made for the Savoy label and it is overflowing with gems and an almost countless number of alternate takes. Bird was one of the most important jazzmen of all time and nearly every note he recorded (in the studios if not live) is well worth hearing.

The Savoy studio procedure was simple. As quoted in an April 16. however. informal jam sessions. was Parker's first as session leader. six-disc series Charlie Parker on Dial. and the seemingly endless supply of broadcast and on-location recordings. we have the complete Charlie Parker on Savoy. he is preserved with big bands. It'll just take a minute. The bulk of the remainder is comprised of his other studio efforts for Dial (102).

If you are interested in exploring Bird but are put off by the innumerable collections and packages, this might be the one for you. Most of the recordings are good quality or better, you get a flavor of CP's playing across forms that might surprise you, and the album has several gems that you'll want to listen to repeatedly. Culling a career, even a short one, into one meaningful disk is a thankless task but I feel Keepnews, who made this selection from his larger boxed set, has done a great job.

Charlie Parker Memorial, Vol. 2. 2 is an LP record by Charlie Parker, released posthumously by Savoy Records. Several tracks on this album had been previously released on other formats (78 rpm records, 7 inch EPs and 10 inch LPs), but is the first 12-inch release of these master takes. It contains selections from five sessions recorded between 1945 and 1948, and contains several previously unreleased alternate takes from these sessions.
