Charlie Parker Memorial, Vol. 1 is an LP record by Charlie Parker, released posthumously by Savoy Records. Several tracks on this album had been previously released on other formats (78 rpm records, 7 inch EPs and 10 inch LPs), but is the first 12-inch release of these master takes. It contains selections from four sessions recorded in 1947 and 1948, and contains several previously unreleased alternate takes from these sessions.

Masterworks: 1946-1947 is both an appropriate and ill chosen term for the 23 Charlie Parker performances packed into this 1998 Giants of Jazz compilation. Everything on this disc was recorded for Ross Russell's Dial label in Hollywood and New York between March 28, 1946 and December 17, 1947. Most of Bird's breathtaking ballads and mind-blowing originals really were masterfully rendered, whereas three titles from July 29, 1946 were recorded during a toxic meltdown that sent Bird - initially handcuffed and strait-jacketed - into a cell in the Los Angeles County Jail followed by six.

Disc 4 uncovers rare and bright gems from historic Bird recordings. The final Dial sessions of 1947 feature the velvet baritone of Earl Coleman, who also provides some vivid memories of Bird's incarceration at Camarillo and how touching incites into Howard McGhee, who appears to have "been there" for the saxophonist when the chips were down. The tracks, "This Is Always," and "Dark Shadows" a svelte and Bird is in fine form-tender as he caresses each note of his solos, as they appear seemingly suspended in space and time.
