Album The Libertines. The ideal girl in London from France Came over, then left me, she left me entranced Now I have to get by once again on my own Nothing but memories. So I remember your eyes, that unique shade of brown While these blue eyes of mine, they stay closed I kissed you goodbye on the N109 I choked as I watched the bus go. Choking and smoking to your angelic soul Choking and smoking myself into a hole Where the only way out is to sleep and to dream And to cry out your name. France is the last track of the album The Libertines

The Libertines are one of the most exciting, chaotic rock’n’roll groups of the past 20 years and in 2016 they’re still as relevant as ever. Despite only releasing three studio albums, 2002’s debut ‘Up The Bracket’, 2004’s ‘The Libertines’ and 2015’s ‘Anthems For Doomed Youth’ they have a legacy as one of the most inspiring and influential British bands of the 21st century. The track was enough for them to be crowned as Britain’s best new band by NME, and they released their first album ‘Up The Bracket’ in 2002 with Clash legend Mick Jones taking over production duties. The album debuted at Number 35 in the UK Albums Chart. Despite their success, Doherty’s drug use and dependence on crack cocaine and heroin led to the break-down of his relationship with his bandmates.

Not just because their music carries on the traditions of previous greats from the Beatles to the Clash, or because of their involvement with already-legendary figures like Alan McGee, Mick Jones, and Geoff Travis, or because their peers in the British music scene just weren't as interesting to cover, but because the band's future always teeters between dazzling and dangerously.

The Libertines’ new album has got an update courtesy of Carl Barât. The band, which is fronted by Barât and Pete Doherty, are working on a follow-up to 2015’s Anthems For Doomed Youth. That album was their first for over a decade, since 2004’s self-titled The Libertines, and earlier in 2018 they announced this fourth LP. The news came as part of a press release which also revealed the name of the hotel they’re opening in Margate, Kent which is called The Albion Rooms. It’s also functioning as a studio, and the new album is being recorded there. Photographer Andy Willsher recalls, "As The Libertines came to an acrimonious split, Pete and Carl did separate interviews for the NME, Pete was living in a pretty squalid flat in Farringdon at the time – while I was photographing him he wrote 'Forever' on the wall, which added poignancy to the shot.
