What is Sands?Lanterna primarily solo project. Sands is the third Lanterna release, after 1995's self-titled debut and 2001's Elm Street. What kind of music does Lanterna play? If Lanterna had to filed under one category, it'd most likely be ambient, although that label is also inadequate: Brian Eno's famous quip that ambient music should be as ignorable as it is interesting applies only partially to Sands.

Frayne recorded rough mixes of the songs on Sands over the course of a few weeks, adding drum loops and vocals in select spots. The result is a startlingly fresh and ambient combination of sounds. Lanterna has been compared to Brian Eno and Flying Saucer Attack, yet Frayne and Steve Day, who added precision to the disc's rhythmic tracks, are continually able to create new and symphonic pictures of sound.

Sands, however, has a much more intimate and organic sound. It is a warmer and more acoustic album than his first two, although Frayne utilizes drum machines and some ambient keyboard atmospherics on a few of the tracks. In the context of this album, however, they work. The album begins with "West Side Highway," which shows Lanterna exploring a slightly different sound than on the previous two records. Lanterna is a musical project led by guitarist Henry Frayne, formerly of The Moon Seven Times and Area. Their tracks are evocative soundscapes, usually instrumental, that focus on Frayne's melodic guitar work awash in effects. First released as a side project to The Moon Seven Times, Lanterna was a collaboration between Frayne, drummer Brendan Gamble, vocalist Lynn Canfield, James Dobson, Matt Hurt and Brendan Korb.
