Solo Concerts: Bremen/Lausanne is a recording released through ECM by jazz pianist Keith Jarrett performing solo improvisations recorded in Bremen (July) and Lausanne (March) in 1973; in between, Jarrett played in the US with his American quartet. Originally released as a 3-LP album, it was the first of Jarrett's live solo performances to be released on ECM, following his studio-based debut solo recording Facing You (1971), and preceding his record-breaking Köln Concert (1975).

Originally released as a three-LP set, the two solo piano recitals feature Jarrett freely improvising and never seeming to run out of ideas. A simple figure often develops through repetition and subtle variations into a rather complex sequence and eventually evolves into a new figure. One of the improvisations lasts for three LP sides (64 minutes), while the second concert has two long solos for 30 and 35 minutes, respectively.

Both works, Bremen and Lausanne, engulf every spectrum of emotion by being romantic yet unattached, melancholic yet celebratory, anxious yet calm, etc. I will typically go about my daily activities while listening to piano concerts, but the moment I pressed play on my CD player, Keith Jarrett's performance demands attention all the way through. By the end of Bremen, I was finally able to breathe again having felt as if the music was breathing for me, for Life is the essence of Keith's performance.
