This eight-CD set should be a part of any collection that presumes to take American music - not just rock & roll or rhythm & blues - seriously. Atlantic Records was one of dozens of independent labels started up after the war by neophyte executives and producers, but it was different from most of the others in that the guys who ran it were honest and genuinely loved music. Coupled with a lot of luck and some good judgment, the results trace a good chunk of the history of American music and popular culture
Atlantic Rhythm & Blues 1947-1974. 1 2 3 4 5. Ray Charles, Roberta Flack, The Drifters.
Atlantic Records has ridden musical trends since the late '40s; this album chronicles 1967-1969 of the label's work in black pop, during which artists such as Aretha Franklin, Tyrone Davis, Clarence Carter and Otis Redding oversaw the creation and flowering of soul music. If you are trying to replace the cassette Atlantic Rhythm and Blues 1947-1974 Vol 6 1966-1969 (as I was) just keep in mind you will have to make 2 CD purchases, both 1965-1967 & 1967-1969 You will get everything on the original cassette and also about 20 surprises that were not on the original cassette.
