Produced by Paul Simon. You Can Call Me Al Lyrics. A man walks down the street He says, "Why am I soft in the middle, now? Why am I soft in the middle? The rest of my life is so hard I need a photo-opportunity I want a shot at redemption Don't want to end up a cartoon In a cartoon graveyard" Bonedigger, Bonedigger Dogs in the moonlight Far away in my well-lit door Mr. Beerbelly, Beerbelly Get these mutts away from me You know, I don't find this stuff amusing anymore
Even though the Graceland album did very well, this song was a slow starter. The single did well in the UK, where it made in September 1986, but in America, it stalled at in October. Mike from Philadelphia, NjThe "Al" in Paul Simons song "You can call me Al" is Albert Tancredi a former employee of Chevy Chase's. Al Tancredi has a 18 inch neck and was Chevy's chef. When Paul Simon was introduced to Al Tancredi as Chevy's chef Paul Simon said "your chef he looks like your body guard". Any way several months later the song was released. The rest is history Thanks Mike T.
ON AUG. 25, 1986, PAUL SIMON, THEN 44, released his seventh and, arguably, most celebrated solo album, Graceland. Its acclaim, however, was slow to build. Influenced by South African sounds (and recorded partly in Johannesburg), the set made a measured climb up the Billboard 200, cresting at No. 6 that November
Paul Simon's Graceland album combined a huge mixture of musical styles and was recorded in studios all over the world. The man responsible for putting it all together, both sonically and physically, was Simon's long-time engineer Roy Halee Roy Halee hasn't only worked with Simon & Garfunkel, you know. One of the tracks recorded entirely at the Hit Factory was the album's first single, 'You Can Call Me Al', whose lyrics dealing with identity crisis were inspired by a party that Paul Simon had attended with then-wife, Peggy Harper, where the host mistakenly addressed them as 'Al' and 'Betty'. For Simon, this turned out to be a happy accident.
Paul Simon‘s joyous, vibrant Graceland, released 30 years ago today, remains one of the most beloved albums in pop history. And also one the most controversial. Simon had ventured to South Africa to record the album with local musicians, ignoring an international boycott set in place by the United Nations Anti-Apartheid Committee. What gives the right to wear the cloak of morality? he railed at the time. Simon also used the time on SNL‘s Rockefeller Center stage to film a music video for the album’s first single, You Can Call Me Al, but he was ultimately displeased with the result. Michaels alluded to this when hanging out with old friend (and former leading man) Chevy Chase. Paul had a test pressing of the album and Lorne Michaels had a copy at his summer house, said Chase in Laura Jackson’s book Paul Simon: The Definitive Biography.
By Jack Sharkey, May 2, 2013. This week I’m going to de-construct the soundstage on Paul Simon’s groundbreaking 1986 hit You Can Call Me Al. I used a pair of KEF R900’s powered by a Parasound J1/J2 monoblock/preamp pairing and a Musical Fidelity A1008 CD player. This is a pretty elaborate recording, engineered by Roy Halee who worked with Simon throughout his career.
With Graceland, Paul Simon hit on the idea of combining his always perceptive songwriting with the little-heard mbaqanga music of South Africa, creating a fascinating hybrid that re-enchanted his old audience and earned him a new one. It is true that the South African angle (including its controversial aspect during the apartheid days) was a powerful marketing tool and that the catchy music succeeded in presenting listeners with that magical combination: something they'd never heard before that nevertheless sounded familiar.
