One-Trick Pony, Paul Simon's fifth solo studio album, was released in 1980. It was Simon's first album for Warner Bros. Records, and his first new studio album since 1975's Still Crazy After All These Years. His back catalog from Columbia Records would also move to Warner Bros. as a result of his signing with the label. Paul Simon's One-Trick Pony was released concurrently with the film of the same name, in which Simon also starred.

Paul Simon is truly an American Icon. One Trick Pony' is not the first album that comes to mind in his extensive cannon. "How terribly strange to be 70") Who would have thought that he would still be making quality, relevant music 50 years on? I ignored this album when it first came out, but that was my loss. The first song, "Late in the Evening" appears on later compilations, but it seemed pretentious to me when I first heard it. What part it plays in the movie, I don't know, but the song, and the album, has withstood the test of time

I think one of the reasons could be because not everyone can "understand" that easily changes of tempo signatures such as the ones presented in "Ace in the Hole" or changes in the key signatures such as the ones presented in "Jonah". People prefer those more predictable songs by him, like the ones he used to present with Garfunkel. Besides, I suppose this album was too connected to the movie that wasn't very successful. Perhaps if it was promoted separately it would have found.
