Relax" is the debut single by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, released in the United Kingdom by ZTT Records in 1983. The song was later included on the album Welcome to the Pleasuredome (1984). Although fairly inauspicious upon initial release, "Relax" finally reached number one on the UK singles chart on 22 January 1984, ultimately becoming one of the most controversial and most commercially successful records of the decade.
Trevor Horn discovered Frankie Goes To Hollywood shortly after creating his record company ZTT when he saw the band performing "Relax" and "Two Tribes" on a Channel 4 show called The Tube. Why don't you sign them up?" Horn didn't think much about them until months later when he heard them again on BBC Radio 1 DJ David Jensen's radio show. When Horn contacted them to sign them, he was unaware that the band was on the brink of breaking up because they felt unsuccessful. Relax" was the only song on the album that was recorded on analog tape. The rest was recorded on a Sony F1 digital tape machine.

Relax is the debut single by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, released in the United Kingdom in 1983. It was written in 1982 after frontman Holly Johnson got the song’s basic idea while on his way to band practice. Producer and owner of ZTT Records Trevor Horn was first exposed to FGTH performing Relax on Britain’s Channel 4’s show The Tube, but didn’t sign them until hearing it again later on DJ David Jensen’s radio show on BBC Radio 1.
Relax" was Frankie Goes To Hollywood's first single. It was originally released in October 1983 and managed to dominate the upper chart positions across Europe and elsewhere in early 1984. 4:24 instrumental version, often subtitled "from soft to hard", prefaced with "daily sign-in" skit. 3:55 album version, often subtitled "come fighting", has slightly different effects & mixing vs. the 7" version. 3:55 untitled version first released in 1993 but probably made in '83/'84, fans call it the "classic.
In May 1983, having seen Frankie Goes to Hollywood perform 'Relax' on Channel Four's The Tube music programme, Horn signed the band to ZTT. Fronted by singer Holly Johnson, with Paul Rutherford on vocals and keyboards, Brian Nash on guitar, Mark O'Toole on bass and Peter Gill on drums, Frankie had gone through various line-up changes between their formation in 1980 and the John Peel session they recorded for BBC Radio One in October '8. For some bizarre reason, the studio started doing really well, and within six months a band named Sniff 'n' the Tears came in to record an album, Fickle Heart, and I ended up co-producing it just because I discovered this amazing thing called the mute switch. They were really good musicians and they'd play everything right through each song.
