Sir Adrian Boult's recording of the Enigma Variations with the London Symphony was made when both he and the orchestra were at their peak. It reflects an extraordinary blend of spontaneity and the grand manner, and shows great insight into the score. These were recorded well before the advent of digital recording technology, and they show just a little bit of their age with some minor congestion at peaks, a trace of boominess with timpani, and ever-so-slightly less refined sound than we are accustomed to with today's recordings.
