The Pomp and Circumstance Marches receive similar treatment by Boult with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Even the bass drum is fairly well defined, a feat not often heard outside of Telarc recordings. When I listen to them, I think of how they remind me of the golden days of the British Empire. Sir Arthur Bliss conducts the London Symphony Orchestra in the Pomp and Circumstances Marches from 1959. Despite the dated sound, the performances are extraordinary - bettered only by Boult. Like Mehta, the performances are full-blooded and exciting, much more so than the Davis set.

The Pomp and Circumstance Marches (full title Pomp and Circumstance Military Marches), Op. 39, are a series of marches for orchestra composed by Sir Edward Elgar. They include some of Elgar's best-known compositions. The title is taken from Act III, Scene 3 of Shakespeare's Othello: Farewell the neighing steed and the shrill trump, The spirit-stirring drum, th'ear-piercing fife, The royal banner, and all quality, Pride, pomp, and circumstance of glorious war!
