The two live cuts at the end of the disc (including Jack Bruce's "Rope Ladder to the Moon") from the group's concert album on the Bronze label also show how good this group could sound on-stage - a little loud at times, but still cohesive and intense. As a single-CD anthology, it's difficult to imagine too many releases outdoing this one, and as it promises an "introduction" to the group, its reach never exceeds its grasp or its ambitions.

Colosseum were a pioneering English progressive jazz-rock band, mixing blues, rock and jazz-based improvisation. Colosseum, one of the first bands to fuse jazz, rock & blues were formed in Spring 1968 by drummer Jon Hiseman with tenor sax player Dick Heckstall-Smith, who had previously worked together in the New Jazz Orchestra and in The Graham Bond Organisation, where Hiseman had replaced Ginger Baker in 1966.

Colosseum was one of the seminal progressive bands that emerged in the late sixties; they disbanded in 1971. Drummer Jon Hiseman, sax man Dick Heckstall-Smith, keyboard player Dave Greenslade, and guitarist James Litherland were all exceptional talents on their instruments, and the band's extensions on blues and rock forms gave them all room to shine. Their debut album, Those Who Are About to Die Salute You (1969) spotlighted their talents in unusual compositions, and the follow-up, Valentyne Suite (from later the same year), featured the extended title composition filling an entire side.

Valentyne Suite" is Colosseum's second album, which in some ways shows an improvement on their impressive debut. Two major parts delimited in "Valentyne Suite". I've symbolicly named them "Introduction (to the Valentyne Suite" and "The Valentyne Suite (itself)". Focus should be on the "Valentyne Suite" as it is a master-suite within the master-album. I would rather prefer to have an album full of good blues tracks (as on side A) or fully developed suite with more than three themes spread over two sides of LP.
