Deap Vally - 'Sistrionix'. Right from the off, the witty title that Deap Vally give their debut album shows you how they choose to use their rage. They’ve been vocal of late about the frustrations they’ve felt making their way as a female duo, and have supported Grimes’ blog protests on similar subjects. Woman Of Intention’ and ‘Raw Material’ go into detail on those rankles, being seething, straight-setting slaps of itchy irritation.
Sistrionix is this young duo's debut album, produced by Lars Stalfors, and it sounds huge, full of clanging, distorted guitar riffs, wild, galloping drums, and Troy's raging, impassioned vocals. With highlights like "End of the World," the defiant and declarative "Baby I Call Hell," the epic "Six Feet Under," and the sly "Gonna Make My Own Money," which, despite being sly is still a song that Troy shouts and screams like she's in a knife fight, this is a memorable debut.
Whether or not ‘Sistrionix’ picks up any other accolades this year, it’s easily the loudest album made by two women who met at a crochet class. Julie Edwards (drummer) and Lindsey Troy (singer, terrific axeperson) are LA valley girls who make stripped-back, fuzzed-up blues-rock in the White Stripes mould – except louder. Moreover, guys’ desire for the deep valleys of Deap Vally is pretty pathetic. Brother, brother, brother. These legs are closed to you’ is Troy’s withering dismissal on ‘Lies’. This album is one hell of a sexual power play, with the duo taking the bad-girl mystique of ’70s rockers The Runaways into aggressive, and compelling, new territory. Hints of self-aware humour within some inspired lyrics help break things up: ‘I’m a woman with intention, tapped into infinity.
Sistrionix by Deap Vally functions as a reassuring modern addition to the legacy of Garage-rock music. Every song on here sounds like a "track 1", radiating with heat, volume & fury. Lindsey Roy's guitar sounds like a fleet of tanks, and Julie Edwards' Led Zeppelin-ish drumming sounds like a fleet of bulldozers. A decent opening effort from this California duo who met in a knitting class. Don't be fooled, the two put together a good rock/blues set that is worth a listen. My biggest problem with the album is that after about 5 or 6 songs, they do tend to sound alike. Play it in small bursts and you will like it alot. I do hope they put out a second album.
This is not an "ironic", "fun", "rock" record pivoting on the theoretical novelty value of its creators (although if all the people who bought the first Darkness album 10 years ago bought Sistrionix, the band would probably be quite OK with that). It is a thoroughly unironic, seriously fun, rock record, in which seizing the day (well, the night), settling scores and the importance of making one's own money are explored in detail, with leering electric guitar and crashing kit.
