Crowded House is the self-titled debut album by the band Crowded House. It was released in 1986 and produced by Mitchell Froom. The album was the first to feature band-leader Neil Finn following the break-up of his previous group Split Enz. The album includes the hit singles "Don't Dream It's Over", "Something So Strong", "Mean to Me", "World Where You Live" and "Now We're Getting Somewhere", the first four of which were included on the group's first greatest hits album Recurring Dream.
Intriguer isn’t as self-consciously weighty as Time on Earth - Finn is not tackling mortality in the wake of the death of his longtime friend and bandmate Paul Hester - but it’s also not as hazy as Finn’s pair of solo LPs. In tone and timbre, it’s closest to the second Finn Brothers album, the ruminative Everyone Is Here, but it lacks the reflective undertow of that 2004 album; it may be subdued, but it’s not reveling in its melancholy, it’s riding a gentle wave, swaying from song to song.
Although interspersed with tiny, sparkling kernels of potential, Intriguer is nothing other than an album of (really) strong B-sides; which, given the majestic calibre of some of Crowded House's previous work, is both surprising and disappointing. Their sixth album in a career that has spanned the best part of twenty-five years - and the second since reforming, following the suicide of original drummer Paul Hester - these ten songs, although bristling with ambition, merely meander amid a slipstream of cloying comfort. In other words, what we have here is songwriting by numbers.

Unlike Time on Earth, the 2007 "reunion" album for Crowded House which came from what was intended to be a Neil Finn solo record, Intriguer is a complete recording. It's a vision, if you will, of Crowded House circa 2010 - Finn, original bassist Nick Seymour, long-serving session/touring musician Mick Hart and drummer Matt Sherrod. Perhaps it's for this very reason that Intriguer - by definition, one who intrigues - feels like such a complete experience. A documentation of a revitalised and invigorated household name, Finn and co. have put their name to what is potentially.
