Description
She & Him is an American musical duo consisting of Zooey Deschanel (vocals, piano, ukulele) and M. Ward (guitar, production). The band's first album, Volume One, was released on Merge Records in March 2008. The duo is augmented by session musicians Scott McPherson (drums), Paul Brainard (pedal steel guitar) and Mike Coykendall (bass, guitar). Deschanel and Ward met on the set of the film The Go-Getter, in which Deschanel had a starring role.
She & Him’s sixth album features holiday classics like Darlene Love and Spector’s Marshmallow World, Bing Crosby’s Mele Kalikimaka and Chuck Berry’s Run Run Rudolph. However, in the quirky duo’s true fashion, the LP will also include lesser-known songs, such as folk-singer Vashti Bunyon’s Coldest Night of the Year and Frank Sinatra’s Christmas Memories. Like many a Christmas collection, the record becomes less elegant on sillier tunes like "Must Be Santa" (derived from a German drinking song) and a strangely plaintive version of the Chipmunks' "Christmas Don't Be Late. These diversions are limited, though, and, remarkably, don't include a rather beautiful rendition of "Mele Kalikimaka. Taken together, Christmas Party is a charmer.
