Thirteen years after his first solo album, Blows Against the Empire, Paul Kantner delivered this sequel, named after the loose affiliation of Bay Area musicians who had played on Blows and subtitled, The Empire Blows Back. Like the first album, this one was a science fiction concept album about a commune/rock band eventually fleeing into outer space to escape right-wing oppression

Paul Kantner chronology. Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra (1983). Kantner had intended this record to be a soundtrack to a novel he was writing at the time. The album is the sequel to Kantner's Hugo Award nominated 1970 album Blows Against the Empire, and carries the sub-title "The Empire Blows Back. At the time of the album's release, the novel had not yet been completed but included with the album was an insert which explained the story. The insert describes a San Francisco band that develops telepathic amplification technology, which attracts the attention of various governments

Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra, a moniker later used on a Kantner album in the early 1980s. In 1971, the album was nominated for the prestigious science fiction prize, the Hugo Award, a rare honor for a musical recording. Kantner and Slick were a couple during this period. Regardless of this success, the band considered the album's sales to be relatively disappointing compared to its predecessor and requested an audit from RCA Records, distributor of their Grunt label. Earth was released in February 1978 and also went platinum. The album featured the singles "Count on Me" ( US Billboard Chart), "Runaway" ( US Billboard Chart), and "Crazy Feelin'" ( US Billboard Chart).
