Perséphone (Persephone) is a musical work (mélodrame) for speaker, solo singers, chorus, dancers and orchestra with music by Igor Stravinsky and a libretto by André Gide. It was first performed under the direction of the composer at the Opéra in Paris, on 30 April 1934 in a double bill with the ballet Diane de Poitiers by Jacques Ibert.
The Orchestra of St. Luke's (OSL) is an American chamber orchestra based in New York City, formed in 1974. The orchestra performs at several venues in New York City, including: Carnegie Hall. Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts. Saint Thomas Church (Manhattan). Congregation Emanu-El of New York. Morgan Library & Museum. Orchestra of St. Luke's is the orchestra for Paul Taylor Dance Company.
I fell in love with Stravinsky's 'The Rake's Progress' in the 1950s via the composer's 1953 recording of the opera with the cast, chorus and orchestra of the Metropolitan Opera. Igor Stravinsky: The Rake's Progress (It was his second of three recordings of the opera. But the real star of this recording is Robert Craft and the Orchestra of St. Luke's and the Gregg Smith Singers are simply superb. Craft's molding of the score is more pointed than that of the composer himself. He moves the performance right along, which is absolutely appropriate for this score, and actually takes about ten minutes less than Stravinsky.
This is a listing of all of Igor Stravinsky's commercially released studio recordings as a conductor or as a pianist; it also includes recordings conducted by Robert Craft "under the supervision of the composer. Columbia Symphony Orchestra; Igor Stravinsky (May 2, 1966 – Hollywood). The Faun and the Shepherdess. Mary Simmons (m-s); CBC Symphony Orchestra; Igor Stravinsky (May 7–8, 1964 – Toronto).
COMPOSER: Igor Stravinsky. CHOIR: Gregg Smith Singers. CONDUCTOR: Robert Craft. More from this artist.
The Gregg Smith Singers are one of the world's primary small choral ensembles, particularly among those with a reputation for 20th century music. When Gregg Smith founded the ensemble, he was an assistant in the UCLA (University of California at Los Angeles) Department of Music. In 1958 the group made its first appearance on the international musical scene, and later appeared at the Brussels World's Fair. This association continued for 12 years until the great composer's death in 1971. Smith himself was chosen to conduct the chorus and orchestra for Stravinsky's funeral services in Venice. The Singers undertook their second European tour in 1971; since then they continued touring frequently, totaling 34 tours by the end of the century.
