Within the Realm of a Dying Sun is the third studio album by the band Dead Can Dance. It was released on 27 July 1987 by record label 4AD. By this time, Dead Can Dance were predominantly a duo of Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry, along with Peter Ulrich, after the departure of Scott Rodger and James Pinker in 1987.

For their second album, Spleen and Ideal, the group comprised the core duo of Gerrard and Perry with cello, trombone and tympani added in by session musicians. Released in November 1985, it was co-produced by the duo and John A. Rivers. Raggett describes it as "a consciously medieval European sound like it was recorded in an immense cathedral". The group built a following in Europe, and the album reached No. 2 on the UK indie charts. By 1989, Gerrard and Perry had separated domestically – Gerrard returned to Australia and Perry moved to Ireland – but still wrote,. Within the Realm of a Dying Sun (1987).

Released in 1988, "Spleen and Ideal" (a title taken from one of Charles Baudelaire's "Flowers of Evil" poems) marks a definite change of direction.

When Dead Can Dance released their self-titled debut in 1984, the group appeared as just another in a string of gothic post-punk bands to emerge out of the collapse of the original British punk scene – talented, if unremarkable. The album clearly reflects the influence of the later Joy Division and gothic pioneers Bauhaus. Despite its derivative character, it nevertheless showed great signs of promise for the band’s future. Dead Can Dance is a competent but ultimately forgettable record. What the group had begun to develop in their previous album, Spleen and Ideal, found its fullest expression on Within the Realm of a Dying Sun. The album is the crowning achievement of the gothic genre, unmatched by any others before or since. From the moment the strings join the opening chimes of Anywhere Out of This World, the listener is wrapped the album’s tenebrous coils.

With this amazing album, Dead Can Dance fully took the plunge into the heady mix of musical traditions that would come to define its sound and style for the remainder of its career. The straightforward goth affectations are exchanged for a sonic palette and range of imagination. Calling it "haunting" and "atmospheric" barely scratches even the initial surface of the album's power.
