White Rabbit" is a song written by Grace Slick and recorded by the American rock band Jefferson Airplane for their 1967 album Surrealistic Pillow. It was released as a single and became the band's second top-10 success, peaking at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was ranked number 478 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, Number 116 on Rate Your Music's Top Singles of All Time, and appears on The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.
The White Rabbit is a fictional character in Lewis Carroll's book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. He appears at the very beginning of the book, in chapter one, wearing a waistcoat, and muttering "Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!" Alice follows him down the rabbit hole into Wonderland. Alice encounters him again when he mistakes her for his housemaid Mary Ann and she becomes trapped in his house after growing too large.
White Rabbit was written by San Francisco-based singer Grace Slick while she was still a member of her original band, The Great Society. Upon joining Jefferson Airplane in 1966, she offered up White Rabbit while the band was recording their seminal second album, Surrealistic Pillow. The song became the band’s second biggest hit, peaking at on the pop charts. The song’s metaphorical drug references flew largely over the heads of radio censors, but White Rabbit did eventually end up on blacklists at several stations once its meaning became apparent.
