This Meets That finds guitarist John Scofield looking both backward and forward. It's his first recording for the Emarcy label, but for the occasion Scofield resurrected the trio he'd used on several previous albums, most recently 2004's EnRoute: bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Bill Stewart.

East Meets West is the debut album by jazz guitarist John Scofield. It was recorded in 1977 at the Onkio Haus in Tokyo with bassist Clint Houston and Motohiko Hino on drums. The opening tracks of either side of the LP include trumpeter Terumasa Hino, the drummer's brother. The album was released under the title John Scofield in 1978 by Trio Records in Japan. After Trio closed, Black Hawk Records released the album in 1987 under the title East Meets West.

Album · 2007 · 12 Songs. Delightfully eclectic and artfully executed, This Meets That is vintage Scofield, covering a range of styles, sparkling guitar tones, and impressive soloing. He's joined here by compatriots Steve Swallow on bass and Bill Stewart on drums, who have backed Scofield many times and are probably his most sympathetic rhythm section (tellingly, Scofield calls them his A-Team ), along with a four-piece horn section that adds depth to many of the tunes.

The first tones you hear on This Meets That are those of John Scofield's guitar as if it's being tuned to a particular frequency. Listening to the CD it becomes clear there is, in fact, a wavelength into which all the musicians involved have locked. No doubt bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Bill Stewart know that wavelength well, having worked with Scofield in the past, including Enroute (Verve, 2004). Scofield's distinction as a guitarist gains prominence as the album comes to a close.

John Scofield has now played with every major jazz name under the sun, from Miles to Herbie and has shown himself capable of tackling styles from jazz to funk and even a bit of blues and rock (with the Grateful Dead's Phil Lesh). Now he turns his eye to the area that usually gets associated with one of the other guitarists of his level of expertise, Bill Frisell: yes, the meeting of the album's title is Sco meeting country blues. But this album's a mixed bag and the following track, Down D, reminds one of the recent instrumental explorations of Tom Verlaine, or perhaps Jerry Garcia's lonesome twang. There's a simplicity here born of years of experience and only on Strangeness in the Night does the playing seem a little aimless.
