Strung out formed in 1989 out of Simi Valley, California, consisting of Jason Cruz (Vocals), Jake Kiley (Guitar), Rob Ramos (Guitar), Jim Cherry (Bass), and Adam Austin (drums). After striking a deal with Fat Wreck Chords in the spring of 1994, Strung Out released their debut album, Another Day In Paradise, and two years later released sophomore album, Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues. At this point, fans were already in high anticipation to hear what Strung Out had in store for them on Black Out The Sky. As many bands enjoy a change of pace and taking risks, this time around, Strung Out chose to release an EP of unplugged material bringing the songs down to the form in which a lot of music is conceived, with simply an acoustic guitar.

What Strung Out give us with Black Out The Sky is not an entirely acoustic endeavor. Drums permeate most of the 8 songs on this release in some form or another. As do an array of instruments played by an incredibly talented group of veteran musicians. Still, though this record has an acoustic theme going for it, it feels musically uneven. We get glimpses of that dark tone here and there on this record and it works so well. Not to mention, that eerie sound fits the cover art of this album, dark, devilish and perhaps even a little satanic, in the best kind of way. The originals on Black Out The Sky either hit hard or miss the mark completely. First single, Town Of Corazon, is simply an acoustic song and while catchy enough, it fails to excite. Duke Of Sorrow is delivered to us with a country pop sheen with Cruz singing yet another song about the days of yore.

They are known mainly for their musical style, which fuses aspects of melodic punk rock, progressive rock and heavy metal to form their primary sound. They have released eight studio albums on Fat Wreck Chords as well as one Live album, 2 B-sides collections, a best-of, a box set and appeared on numerous compilations and skate/surf/dirt bike/offroading videos.
