I’m not the biggest Swingin’ Utters fan, but one my best friends is, I swear. I certainly have respect for their part in the ’90s punk scene and their live show. I guess I expected looser production and a stronger rock and roll sound as I perused their catalog this afternoon, but this was Epitaph-esque. That said, for these three unreleased songs, the resulting music is quiet and approachable in an indie way. The aspect standing out on Not Your Savior, which is a No Use For A Name song (fittingly enough), is the acoustic guitar under a sweeping string section. The opening track, Stuck in a Circle has a quirky They Might Be Giants meets Against Me intro and refrain. I don’t listen to Chuck Ragan, but like that. The unexpected factor would be a ’60s folk rock feel with a splash of country.

The last few years have been good for Swingin’ Utters fans who wanted new music from the long-running San Francisco act. The band ended their seven year hiatus in 2010 and only a year later they released Here, Under Protest. And only two years later they gave us Poorly Formed.
