Don Stover was one of bluegrass' best-loved musicians. A benefit concert featuring Bela Fleck, Tony Trischka, Laurie Lewis, Chesapeake, Bill Keith, and Jim Rooney at the Somerville Theater in Somerville, Massachusetts in November 1994, raised more than nine thousand dollars for Stover to undergo a brain tumor operation. A video of the event was subsequently released by Homespun Tapes. Stover was instrumental in spreading bluegrass in the northeast as a member of the Lilly Brothers, the house band at Boston's Hillbilly Ranch from 1952 until 1970. In addition to forming a new band, the White Oak Mountain Boys, Stover recorded a solo album, Things in Life, featuring mandolinist David Grisman. Originally released in 1972, the album was reissued in 1995.

Overall, Cookin' is an unusual, experimental album, while Better Things in Life, with the exception of "Johnny Wants to be a Star" (essentially another "Guitar Man") and the jaunty, tack piano number "There's Better Things in Life," leans toward ballads. Some of the most unusual items in Reed's catalog are here, but relatively few showcases for his guitar playing.

The Best Things in Life Are Free" is a popular song written by the songwriting team of Buddy DeSylva and Lew Brown (lyrics) and Ray Henderson (music) for the 1927 musical Good News. It enjoyed a revival during the period from 1947 to 1950, when it was covered by many artists. The song first enjoyed chart success in 1927 with the recordings by George Olsen and Frank Black.

4. That iconic "I Love Lucy" scene is true to life. Minus the part about stuffing their uniforms with chocolate, there are factory workers who stand at the moving chocolate conveyor belt, placing chocolates in those frilly wrappers and the holiday-themed boxes. 5. Russell Stover employs 2,900 people to produce its chocolates. When the protagonist in the 1994 Tom Hanks film says "My mama always said, life was like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get," he's holding a box of Russell Stover Candies. It you look closely, you can see the trademark ribbon printed atop the slender white box. 9. Local artists design the specialty boxes. Both Russell Stover and Whitman's were acquired by Lindt & Sprungli in 2014. So you don't have to feel bad about switching up your sweets routine.

Must have Rounder bluegrass album highlighted by some very fine pickin' by Stover and a younger Grisman
