The Revolt of Mamie Stover. A Hollywood Master of Music for the Movies. The first Hollywood composer to write distinctively American scores. A prolific composer, Hugo Friedhofer had a career that spanned early silent film through the sound era, into the 1970s. Friedhofer became the leading orchestrator for Max Steiner, Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Alfred Newman soon after his 1929 arrival in Hollywood

In 1946, at the behest of Alfred Newman, Friedhofer was hired to compose the score for the 1946 William Wyler directed film, The Best Years of Our Lives, which earned him an Oscar for Best Original Score at the 1947 Academy Awards, beating Bernard Herrmann, Miklós Rózsa, William Walton and Franz Waxman. A new recording of the score, released in 1979 by Entr'acte Recording Society, was favorably received at the time. When asked by fellow composer David Raksin as to the progress he was making on his score for Joan of Arc, he replied, "I've just started on the barbecue!". The Revolt of Mamie Stover (1956). Hilda Crane by David Raksin (1956). Jane Russell plays Mamie Stover, saloon singer in Hawaii during WWII with Hugo Friedhofer music in tow. Infectious jazz-ish melody dominates, lush island music for voyage and Hawaii backdrop highlights. Dramatic wartime motifs, other ideas also appear. Jean Simmons plays divorced young woman Hilda Crane, returning to home town with David Raksin supplying musical support. Zesty main title leads. Sometimes warm, sometimes complex dramatic material plays in contrast. Both scores presented in superb stereo sound from original Fox scoring elements vaulted in excellent condition.
