Despite the fact that Swedish metal collective Ghost sings about medieval death via the plague, their melodic fourth album, ‘Prequelle,’ is alluring and at times, quite beautiful.

The fourth full-length album by Swedish band Ghost, Prequelle, is the first to introduce the band’s new leader, Cardinal Copia. Though Ghost has changed of ‘leader’ for every album release, this is usually simply a physical change in appearance, as Tobias Forge is always the man behind the mask; nonetheless, this time there’s someone else on the costume. The album revolves around the middle ages with themes such as death, wrath, and destruction. Contrary to all other released by Ghost, the band did not release any single artwork for Prequelle. The only other art released, apart from the album itself, was a cover designed by artist Marald van Haasteren for Revolver Magazine.

Prequelle is a dizzying, all-consuming rock opera delivered with convincing evangelical zeal. The stage is set with creepy intro Ashes, a reworking of the classic plague rhyme Ring A Ring O’ Roses, before Rats digs its claws in with the biggest hook since Square Hammer. Despite its medieval theme, the music is a homage to the 80s, as with much of this record. Bombastic grandeur aside, Prequelle takes some surprising turns, including two proggy instrumentals. The none-more-retro Miasma subliminally recalls Majestic from last album Meliora and sounds like an extended action sequence, climaxing in an enthusiastic saxophone solo.

Overall, this album prove why Ghost are as popular and well respected as they are. They show they are more than just a stage show with each song. Yet the whole album weaves together thematically so well you become excited for the visuals that will inevitably follow. They do just as well, if not better, than the last album ‘Meliora’ which is a big feat. Fans of Ghost will love this album and newcomers to the band will find something to love and draw them in to the existing story. Musically one of the best rock/metal albums released this year and I don’t say that lightly  .

Perhaps the disjointed nature of this album is because of the rocky legal litigation that the band has been going through from past members, but it's definitely going to take more time for it to grow on me than Infestissumam.
