Blazing Arrow is the second studio album by American hip hop duo Blackalicious. It was released on MCA Records on April 30, 2002.
Blazing Arrow is the major-label debut of underground hip-hop act Blackalicious, and if it sounds like they had more money to work with than ever before, at least they spent it well. Like their full-length debut, Nia, Blackalicious use the full 74 minutes of the compact disc, and every minute has something good. But this album is also a massive advance on the last one, pushing the limber rhymes and tight beats with more musical innovation. Start with the short funk intro "Bow and Arrow," which segues into "Blazing Arrow," featuring a bouncing bassline knocking into a horn section and a hazy, dreamy Harry Nilsson sample on the chorus. Xcel and Gab canvas thirty years of funk, soul, hip-hop and modern R&B;, skipping from one to the other every song.
With their 2000 debut album, Blackalicious established themselves as one of the West Coast's top outfits in this vein, and while it was very good, their follow-up, Blazing Arrow, is simply fantastic, vaulting the duo to the forefront of the progressive hip-hop pack. Much of Blazing Arrow retains NIA's airy, laconic feel, but the group's sense of craft has improved to a startling degree; the hooks are sharper and more plentiful, Gift of Gab's rhymes are denser, Chief Xcel's production is more breathtakingly lush, and his arrangements more sophisticated.
Blazing Arrow (CD, Album). Blazing Arrow Instrumental (2xLP, Promo).
Blackalicious looks like a laughably bad rapper name. While quite hilarious when you first see it, how many artists can take themselves seriously and call themselves Blackalicious" Well, for starters, Blazing Arrow is nothing close to a solo effort. It brings in a hip-hop supergroup headed by Gift of Gab and Chief Xcel and brings in the production talents of DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, and many more. Ben Harper, De La Soul, and Zach De La Rocha all make appearances on the album
Blazing Arrow is the second studio album by American hip hop duo Blackalicious. Studio album by. Blackalicious. Chris Dahlen of Pitchfork called it "one of those classic summer albums that.
